Your roof does a lot of heavy lifting. In Dallas, it has to survive triple-digit summer heat, heavy spring downpours, and the occasional winter freeze. But beyond protection, your roof makes up almost 40% of your home’s visual curb appeal.
We recently completed a full roof replacement on a beautiful painted-brick home right here in Dallas. The homeowners were dealing with an aging, worn-out roof that was not only nearing the end of its lifespan but was also clashing with the modern look of their white-painted brick exterior.
Here is a step-by-step look at how America’s General Contracting transformed this home from the top down.
The “Before”: Worn Shingles and Solar Panel Coordination

When we first inspected this Dallas home, it had a standard, older brown shingle roof. If you look closely at the “Before” photos, you can see the wear and tear. The shingles were losing their protective granules, and the color was heavily faded from years of harsh Texas sun.
Brown roofs used to be the standard, but on a house with crisp white painted brick and black window shutters, the brown just looked out of place. It made the house look older than it actually was.
The Solar Panel Challenge: You’ll also notice a large array of solar panels on the back slope of the roof. Many homeowners worry about replacing their roof when they have solar panels. At America’s General Contracting, this is something we handle smoothly. A roof replacement with solar involves safely detaching the panels and mounting hardware, replacing the roofing system underneath, and ensuring everything is perfectly prepped for re-installation so your home stays watertight and energy-efficient.
The “During”: A Complete, Clean Tear-Off

We don’t believe in taking shortcuts. Some roofers will try to sell you a “lay-over”—which means just nailing new shingles right over the old ones. That is a terrible idea, especially in Dallas where the extra weight and trapped heat will ruin the new shingles fast.
As you can see in the “During” construction shots, our crew got right to work stripping the roof down to the bare bones.
- Total Removal: We removed every single old shingle and the degraded underlayment.
- Decking Inspection: By stripping it down to the wood decking, we can actually see what’s going on underneath. We check for wood rot, soft spots, or water damage that needs to be replaced before the new roof goes on. You can’t build a strong house on a weak foundation, and the same goes for a roof.
- Prep and Underlayment: Once the wood was cleared and prepped, we rolled out a high-quality, water-resistant synthetic underlayment to serve as the ultimate moisture barrier.
The “After”: High-Contrast Curb Appeal and Better Airflow

The final result is night and day. We installed premium architectural shingles in a rich, dark charcoal color.
Why Architectural Shingles? Unlike old, flat 3-tab shingles, architectural shingles are thicker, heavier, and have a dimensional look to them. They carry a much higher wind resistance rating, which gives homeowners serious peace of mind when storm season rolls through North Texas.
The Visual Upgrade: The new dark roof ties the whole house together. It perfectly matches the black window shutters and creates a stunning, modern contrast against the white brick. The house instantly looks newer, cleaner, and more expensive.
Upgraded Ventilation: If you look at the final photos and roof vents. Proper attic ventilation is critical in Dallas. These active vents pull superheated air out of the attic during the summer, which keeps your air conditioner from working so hard and prevents your shingles from baking from the inside out.
