When it comes to home exteriors in North Texas, your roof is your first line of defense. But it’s also one of the most prominent visual features of your home. Recently, our team at America’s General Contractor had the opportunity to tackle a massive roof replacement for a beautiful custom home in Celina, TX.
The homeowners loved their house, with its stunning mix of light brick and natural stone masonry. However, the original brown shingle roof was holding the home’s curb appeal back. More importantly, after years of enduring the brutal Texas sun, heavy spring rains, and unpredictable hail, the old roofing system was reaching the end of its reliable lifespan.
They called us for a solution that would not only protect their investment for decades to come but also give the property a massive visual upgrade. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how we executed this complete roof replacement in Celina.
The “Before”: A Tired Roof Ready for Retirement

If you look at the “Before” photos, you’ll notice a very common trend for homes built a decade or more ago. The original builders opted for a standard brown/weathered-wood shingle. While there is nothing inherently wrong with brown, in this case, it washed out the exterior. The light tan brick, the warm stone, and the brown roof all blended together into one monochromatic look.
But beyond aesthetics, an aging roof in Celina is a liability. Over time, asphalt shingles lose their protective granules. The intense Texas heat bakes the asphalt, causing the edges of the shingles to curl, crack, or become brittle. Once that happens, high winds can easily lift them, allowing wind-driven rain to penetrate the decking below.
The homeowners knew it was time to act before a minor leak turned into a major interior water damage nightmare. They needed a roofing contractor who wouldn’t just slap new shingles over the old ones, but someone who would rebuild the system from the decking up.
The “During”: Tearing It Down to the Bones

A great roof isn’t just about the shingles you see; it’s about the waterproofing layers you don’t see.
At America’s General Contracting, we do things by the book. As you can see in our “During” construction photos, we started with a complete tear-off. We stripped the old, heavy shingles and the outdated felt paper completely off to expose the bare OSB (Oriented Strand Board) roof decking.
Why is a full tear-off so important? Some cut-rate contractors will offer a “lay-over,” where they simply nail new shingles over the old ones to save time and dump fees. We strongly advise against this. Stripping the roof down to the bare wood allows our crew to inspect the decking for any soft spots, rot, or delamination. If you nail a brand-new roof over rotting wood, the nails won’t hold, and your new roof will fail in the first major storm.
Once the decking was inspected and prepped, our crew got to work installing the new foundation:
- Synthetic Underlayment: We rolled out high-quality, tear-resistant synthetic underlayment across the entire roof deck. Unlike old-school 15-pound felt paper that can tear or absorb water, modern synthetic underlayment provides a superior, watertight barrier.
- Ice and Water Shield: We applied specialized leak barriers in the critical “valleys” of the roof (where two slopes meet) and around roof penetrations like chimneys and vents. These are the areas most prone to water pooling and leaks.
- Precision Nailing: Our experienced roofing crew then began the careful process of laying the new architectural shingles, ensuring every single nail was driven directly into the manufacturer’s specified strike zone.
If you are dealing with an aging roof or suspect storm damage, don’t wait for water to show up on your ceiling. You can learn more about our process and the materials we use by visiting our comprehensive roofing services page.
The “After”: A Stunning Contrast and Unmatched Protection

The transformation speaks for itself. We swapped the faded, tired brown shingles for premium, high-definition architectural shingles in a bold, dark charcoal/black blend.
The Visual Impact: Look at the contrast in the “After” photos. The dark roof completely changes the profile of the home. It grounds the structure and makes the lighter tones of the brick and natural stone pop beautifully. It took the house from looking slightly dated to looking sharp, modern, and highly customized. The homeowners were absolutely thrilled with the aesthetic upgrade.
The Structural Impact: More importantly, this Celina home is now armored against the next decade of Texas weather. Architectural shingles (also known as dimensional shingles) are thicker and heavier than standard 3-tab shingles. They boast a higher wind-resistance rating—often up to 130 MPH—meaning they will hold fast during severe spring thunderstorms. Furthermore, the upgraded ventilation we installed will allow the attic to breathe properly, lowering the home’s cooling costs during those brutal 100-degree summer weeks.
